Immortality Law # 29

When you know you have forever, you can afford to be patient, to be kind, to be loving and forgiving. What might be different if you knew your spirit was Eternal?

What else beside our souls or spirits could last forever? Surely not our egos, our bodies, or our minds, which are all designed to perish. As you consider Immortality for the next 10 days, review your beliefs in concepts like reincarnation. Although it exists in many religious traditions and cultures, you may not put much stock in reincarnation unless you've experienced a past life review of some kind.
In the 2012 film, Cloud Atlas, based upon David Mitchell's book of the same title, you can see what one man imagines Immortality to be like, at least for his main character, who reincarnates over and over, going from lives in colonial times through to a post-apocalyptic era, with lessons in every lifetime.
Since our beliefs have such powerful effects upon our behaviors, and death can make us so fearful, the belief in Immortality can be a two edged sword. On the one hand, believing in the idea of reincarnation can free you, somewhat, from the physical fears of death and the tyranny of the ego personality, but it can also cause other anxieties. Because we can get so attached, to particular people, places, and ethnicities, our fears about losing those identities can be as great as the terrors of dying itself, unless we learn to embrace such radical change.

As you bring up the subject of Immortality with friends and family in the coming ten days, mention mortality too, its opposite. Then ask if anyone has had an 'out of the body' experience. Unless we have have seen ourselves from outside of our bodies, we may find it hard to believe that our spirits do indeed transcend the limitations of our vulnerable, perishable bodies.

Ask yourself, and others, what deserves Immortality? And why some ideas, archetypes, and stories seem immortal? As the centuries pass, why do some remain alive in the hearts and minds of people, while others are forgotten?

Forever is not a frame of reference we work with, on a daily basis, so we don’t know much about it.  What would you do with eternity? Many people can’t figure out what to do on a rainy weekend. How would they spend forever?
The next time you feel stressed out, trying to do too much in a single day, think about the vast endlessness of eternity, and relax, you do have a lot more time ahead.
Here are some quotes about Immortality from those who've considered its meanings.

You who long for life, learn that immortality is hidden in transiency.
Buddha

Immortality is accomplished by a "proper Mind," or "mental correctness" based upon the "understanding" of the Seven Hermetic Principles of Universal Cosmic Law that enables the human Mind to manipulate the atomic particles of their own bodies and the surrounding environment.   When a person can do these things, he or she has accomplished the mastery of Life of which a few individuals are already living in this aspect of Mental reality.
J. R. Seydel, author http://www.pymander.com/AETHEREAL/IMMOR~1.htm

Those who know, not only that the Everlasting lives in them, but that what they, and all things, really are is the Everlasting, dwell in the groves of the wish-fulfilling trees, drink the brew of immortality, and listen everywhere to the unheard music of eternal concord. These are the immortals.
Joseph Campbell

If you were to destroy the belief in immortality in mankind, not only love but every living force on which the continuation of all life in the world depended, would dry up at once.
Fyodor Dostoevsky

Death and immortality are an indissoluble pair of lovers, and the person whose face merges in our mind with the faces of the dead, is already immortal while still alive.
Milan Kundera

We are living and we are dying. Not either/or but both/and. That’s mortality turning into Immortality…
Deborah Cumming in her book Recovering From Mortality: Essays From A Cancer Limbo Time

We do not believe in immortality because we can prove it, but we try to prove it because we cannot help believing it.
Harriet Martineau

In our desire for eternal life we pray for an eternity of our habit and comfort, forgetting that immortality is in repeatedly transcending the definite forms of life in order to pursue the infinite truth of life… Let the dead have the immortality of fame, but the living the immortality of love.
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

Immortality is a word which stands for the stability or permanence of that unique and precious quality we discern in the soul.
W. Macneile Dixon, The Human Situation

Immortality – who ever has grasped it,
Is delivered from all burdens of the soul.
Frithjof Schuon in World Wheel

The truth is that we live out our lives putting off all that can be put off; perhaps we all know deep down that we are immortal and that sooner or later all men will do and know all things.
Jorge Luis Borges

Each of us is immortal.
Dr. Brian Weiss, well-known psychiatrist & author, books include Same Soul, Many Bodies
In ten days we'll take up the Law of Ultimate Reality, until then make Immortality your focus.
